A Serious “Do Not Eat” Alert Regarding Pre-cut Veggies That Can Contain Bacteria That Cause Paralysis

A number of pre-cut Japanese pickle types have been recalled due to concerns that they may contain a pathogen that causes paralysis. Because of the possible risk of Clostridium botulinum, customers are being cautioned not to eat the vegetables produced by the California-based company Choshiya Honten Ltd. Under low oxygen conditions, the rod-shaped bacterium Clostridium botulinum generates deadly toxins that can cause botulism, which can cause breathing difficulties, muscle and respiratory paralysis, and in rare cases, death.

The following goods have been recalled: Choshiya’s Abura-Itame Zhasai Prepared Sichuan Vegetable, Fukushin Zuke Prepared Mix Vegetables, Rakkyo Zuke Prepared Vegetables, Aokappa Zuke Prepared Mix Vegetables, and Shiba Zuke Prepared Mix Vegetables. The Tokyo Central and Marukai stores in San Diego, Torrance, Gardena, Los Angeles, Costa Mesa, and West Covina, California, carried all six of the products. The products lack the required ‘Keep Refrigerated’ label, which the Food and Drug Administration said might cause dangerous bacterial growth if left at room temperature. Clostridium botulinum grows on the surfaces of fruits and vegetables and prefers an environment that is low in sugar, salt, and acid, with temperatures ranging from 95 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit. Those who have bought the impacted products are advised by the federal authorities to either throw them away or return them to the store for a complete refund. A healthy adult can become unwell with a few micrograms of the toxin, according to the FDA. General weakness, lightheadedness, double vision, and difficulty speaking or swallowing are all signs of botulism. Individuals who have been poisoned by botulism may not exhibit all of these symptoms simultaneously. The organization advises anyone who is having these issues to get medical help right now.
